A thinner or uncompacted base is the most common reason a patio settles or heaves within a few winters.

Industry guidance calls for a minimum compacted base thickness of 4 inches over well-drained soils, more where the subgrade is soft or saturated. We excavate to that depth and compact the aggregate in lifts, since dumping one thick layer and compacting it once leaves voids that a single pass cannot close, and those voids are exactly where a patio starts to settle unevenly later.

  1. Excavate to depth. The area is dug out to accommodate the base, bedding sand and paver thickness combined, with extra depth over soft or saturated subgrade.
  2. Place and compact aggregate in lifts. Aggregate base goes down in layers, each compacted before the next is added, rather than one thick layer compacted once, which leaves voids a single pass cannot close.
  3. Check grade and slope. The compacted base is checked against the design slope before anything is set on top of it, since correcting slope after the sand and pavers are down means starting over.
