NJ Gold Star Construction works out of Totowa, NJ and covers Bergen, Passaic, Essex, Hudson, Morris and Union County, plus Suffern in Rockland County, New York. That footprint keeps every job within roughly the same driving radius, so a crew can handle a roof in Fair Lawn and a chimney rebuild in Montclair in the same week.
We built our service area around how far a crew can drive and still show up with the same tools, the same materials on the truck and the same day-of availability as a job five minutes from Totowa. That is six New Jersey counties on one side of the Hudson and one New York village on the other.

Bergen County — our largest service area

Every Bergen County municipality runs its own construction code office under New Jersey’s statewide Uniform Construction Code, so the permit process is local even though the underlying rules are the same everywhere.
Bergen County has more individual municipalities than any other county on our list, and each one — Hackensack, Teaneck, Englewood, Fort Lee, Tenafly, Paramus, Ridgewood, Ramsey, Mahwah, Wyckoff, Glen Rock, Franklin Lakes, Garfield, Elmwood Park, Bergenfield, Cliffside Park, Lodi and Rutherford — runs permitting through its own construction code office.
What that means for a Bergen County project
- New Jersey’s Uniform Construction Code applies the same everywhere in the state, so the rules for a deck or a siding job in Fort Lee match the rules in Ramsey.
- The office you actually call, and the exact permit and inspection scheduling, is set by your town, not the county.
- We handle the same six services — roofing, chimney, gutters, masonry, siding and decks — in every Bergen County town we list.
Passaic County — home base in Totowa
Totowa, our home base in Passaic County, shows how a New Jersey town’s permit process actually works: the Borough’s Building Department requires permits for driveways, sidewalks, fence replacement and structural work, and issues them itself under the state’s Uniform Construction Code. Clifton, Hawthorne, Paterson and Wayne each run the same kind of local office.
Being based in Totowa means we deal with its construction code office more than any other, and it is a useful example of how permitting works across the whole service area. The Borough of Totowa Building Department is the local agency that enforces the state’s Uniform Construction Code here — it lists permits as required for tree removal, driveways, sidewalks and fence replacement in addition to additions, decks and masonry retaining walls.
The rest of Passaic County works the same way through separate town offices: Clifton, Hawthorne, Paterson and Wayne all issue their own permits even though the underlying code is identical to Totowa’s.
Essex, Hudson, Morris and Union Counties
Beyond our Bergen and Passaic County base, we serve Essex County towns like Montclair and Nutley, Hudson County’s Jersey City and Secaucus, Morris County’s Morristown and Parsippany, and Union County’s Summit. All six counties fall under the same statewide Uniform Construction Code, so the difference between them is distance and which office issues the permit, not the rules that apply.
These four counties round out our regular service area outside the Bergen–Passaic core:
- Essex County — Montclair and Nutley.
- Hudson County — Jersey City and Secaucus.
- Morris County — Morristown and Parsippany.
- Union County — Summit.
Every one of these towns enforces the same Uniform Construction Code that governs Totowa and Bergen County, administered by the state Department of Community Affairs. What changes town to town is which local construction code office reviews your plans and shows up for inspections — not the standard your roof replacement or patio has to meet.
Suffern, New York works under a different state code
Suffern, NY sits in Rockland County and falls under New York’s statewide Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code rather than New Jersey’s rules, with permits issued through the Village of Suffern’s own building department. NJ Gold Star Construction holds a New Jersey Home Improvement Contractor registration; confirm current Rockland County and Village licensing requirements before work begins there.
Suffern is the one town on our list that is not in New Jersey, and the rulebook changes at the state line. New York’s Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, administered by the Department of State’s Division of Building Standards and Codes, has applied statewide outside New York City since 1984, and local governments — including villages like Suffern — enforce it and can adopt stricter local standards on top of it.
